Djimon Hounsou drew his first breath in a small West African country called Benin and moved to France at 12. In the late 1980s, he started his modeling career in Paris and relocated to the USA in 1990. In 2007, he modeled for Calvin Klein underwear advertisement.

At the dawn of his career in Hollywood, Djimon appeared in Madonna’s Express Yourself and Janet Jackson’s Love Will Never Do music videos. In 1990, he made a big screen debut in Without You I’m Nothing movie. However, the performer is most famed for his parts in Amistad, Gladiator, In America, Push, Paradise Lost, Constantine, Beauty Shop, Furious 7 plus Guardians of the Galaxy. Moreover, he appeared in ER and voiced the main character in Black Panther TV animated series.

Additionally, Hounsou wrote and directed documentary In Search of Voodoo: Roots to Heaven. He is also a founder of Gate of (No) Return Marathon & Festival, which will take place in Benin in 2020/2021.

Djimon Hounsou got romantically involved with Kimora Lee Simmons in 2007. Though they never were married officially in America, the couple had a ceremony in Hounsou’s birth town in 2008. It was a traditional ceremony of that locality. In 2009, the couple welcomed son Kenzo. However, their ways parted in 2012. In 2019, Djimon stated that he saw his son too rarely and that’s why he filed for joint custody against Kimora.

A curious fact: Hounsou was nominated for Oscar two times, SAG Awards three times along with having a nomination for Golden Globe.
