Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones is a son of David Bowie and his first spouse Mary Angela Barnett. After the couple’s divorce, Bowie received sole custody and Duncan rarely communicated with his mom.
Initially, the boy was called Zowie Bowie and at 12, he asked to call him Joey and later Joe. However, at 18, Duncan returned to his birth name. He studied philosophy at College of Wooster and Vanderbilt University, but proceeded with gaining a director’s degree at London Film School. Jones got some practice by being a cameraman at Bowie’s 50th birthday party as well as by shooting commercials.
Today, Duncan is engaged in the movie industry. He made writing and directorial debut with short film Whistle in 2002 and rose to prominence for directing the Moon movie, which brought him BAFTA plus several other awards. His other works include Source Code, Warcraft, Mute and Rogue Trooper. Additionally, in 2020, Duncan announced that he was working on a graphic novel titled Madi.
On November 6, 2012, Duncan Jones got hitched to photographer Rodene Ronquillo. Their son Stenton David Jones drew his first breath on July 10, 2016, exactly 6 months after Bowie’s death. It’s evident that the baby boy’s middle name is a tribute to his grandfather.
In 2019, it was announced that a biopic about Bowie’s first tour titled Stardust would be released. However, Duncan didn’t grant its creators the right for using his dad’s music in the film.
A curious fact: Duncan was David’s best man at his nuptials with Iman.
