Sanaa Lathan is a universal performer who acts brilliantly on stage, screen and TV. She drew her first breath in the family of creative parents, Broadway star Eleanor McCoy and filmmaker Stan Lathan. When she was a little girl, her parents called it quits and Stan later remarried to Marguerite Lathan. That marriage made Sanaa an elder sister to half-brother Tendaji, who is a famed DJ, and three sisters: Lilliane, a professional photographer, Arielle and Colette.

Lathan studied English at UC Berkeley and proceeded with getting a master’s degree in drama at Yale University. She first appeared on TV in an episode of In the House in 1996 and made a big screen debut in Miracle in the Woods the following year. Sanaa rose to prominence in the late 1990s-early 2000s thanks to starring in The Best Man and Love & Basketball movies.

Today, Sanaa Lathan can boast of dozens of successful projects. Among her brightest movies are Brown Sugar, Out of Time, Alien vs. Predator, Something New, The Perfect Guy plus Nappily Ever After. However, she is also famed for her parts in Nip/Tuck, Boss, Shots Fired, The Affair series as well as for voicing personages in Family Guy and The Cleveland Show.

In 1985, Sanaa began her low-key relationship with Shemar Moore and became his spouse on May 11, 1990. However, their marriage didn’t last long and was dissolved in 1996. Afterwards, the celebrity was romantically linked to many other famous men, including Omar Epps, Adawale Ogunleye, Tyrese Gibson, Steve Rifkind and French Montana.

A curious fact: Lathan played in Broadway’s play A Raisin in the Sun and earned a Tony nomination for her work in 2003. She reprised the role of Beneatha Younger for its television production in 2008.
