Spencer Haywood is a former basketball star. Hailing from Silver City, Mississippi, he was raised by single mother Corine Haywood alongside 9 siblings, including brothers A.W., R.T, Joe, Andrew, Leroy plus sisters Lavaughn and Ollie Mae. His father John passed away three weeks before his birth.

After a successful college career and 1967 Mr. Basketball USA title, Spencer earned a gold medal at 1968 Olympic Games being the national team’s leading scorer.

Haywood turned professional in 1969 by joining Denver Rockets. He proceeded with representing Seattle SuperSonics, New York Knicks and New Orleans Jazz before winning the NBA championship with Los Angeles Lakers. However, Haywood was actually dismissed from the finals by the team’s coach because of his cocaine addiction. The athlete spent the 1980-1981 season in Italy before his return to NBA with Washington Bullets.

In 1983, Spencer Haywood retired. Afterwards, he served as a Chairman of the Board of NBA Retired Players Association, ran his foundation for drug and alcohol rehabilitation along with being a basketball commentator for the CBS affiliate in Detroit and hosting a radio talk show.

Haywood tied the knot with model Iman Abdulmajid in 1977 and welcomed his firstborn, daughter Zulekha, in 1978. But the couple’s marriage was dissolved in 1987 while the man won the custody battle over Zulekha.

On November 30, 1990, Spencer espoused a woman named Linda, who gave birth to his three younger daughters: Shaakira, Isis and Courtney. Besides, the former athlete has three grandchildren: Golden, Lavinia and Landon.

A curious fact: Spencer’s first basketball was sewn by his mother of croaker sack and rags.
